Agrigento (Valley of the Temples)

(Departure at 09:00 – Return at 18:00)

Founded around 581 BC Agrigento rises in an area that saw the rise of the polis Akragas, founded by the Geloi of Rhodian-Cretan origin.

It is also known as the City of Temples for its expanse of Doric temples located in the so-called Valley of the Temples, included among the UNESCO World’s Heritage Sites in 1997.
The Valley of the Temples is characterized by the remains of eleven temples, three sanctuaries, a large concentration of necropolis, hydraulic works, fortifications, part of a Roman Hellenistic quarter built on a Greek plan, two important meeting places: the lower Agora (not far from the remains of the temple of Olympian Zeus) and the upper Agora, an Olympeion and a Bouleuterion (council chamber) from the Roman period on a Greek plan.

Agrigento + Piazza Armerina

Piazza Armerina (Villa del Casale)

(Departure at 09:00 – Return at 18:00)

After our visit to the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, it is time to reach Piazza Armerina. This ancient medieval city has a fine Baroque and Norman historic center, but it is just nearby the city that we find the Villa del Casale, a late-Roman rural Villa with its iconic mosaics, declared as a UNESCO World’s Heritage Site since 1997…
